February is the month of love. No one can escape the commercialism that is Valentine’s Day as images of pink and red hearts, bouquets of lush red roses, and delicious chocolates flood every media outlet and social media newsfeed. But love – real, unadulterated love, has nothing to do with any of that Valentine’s stuff.
As a follower of Jesus Christ, real love is so much more. Real love is not a feeling. No, real love, is an action. It is what we do, an intentional choice we make every day. Most importantly, real love is our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, incarnate. So, this Valentine’s Day, I am sharing 10 scriptures about God’s love – it’s power, it’ beauty, it’s sacrifice – and what He commands for believers from the one who is love.
I John 4:7 – 8 (NLT)
Let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God … God is love
I John 3:16, 18 (NLT)
We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us … Let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions
Romans 8:38 (NLT)
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love
I Corinthians 13:4 – 7 (NLT)
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance
I Corinthians 16:14 (NLT)
And do everything with love
Romans 12:9 – 10 (NLT)
Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring in others
Romans 13:10 (NLT)
Love does no wrong to others, so love fulfills the requirements of God’s law
I Peter 4:8 (NLT)
Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins
Colossians 3:14 (NLT)
Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony
I Corinthians 14:1 (NLT)
Let love be your highest goal
I encourage you to celebrate real love this Valentine’s Day and every day!
I really like this post. Yes, it is hard to escape commercialism, but abiding in and sharing God’s love is what truly resonates in this world.
