Back to School Prayer

As many of you know, I have 3 children. My son is 7 and my daughters will be 4 and 11 in just a few days. A new school year is rapidly upon us and always rouses mixed feelings in the Cox house and heralds beginnings and endings simultaneously – the end of summer and fall’s arrival; late nights become the morning rush; we swap summer vacation in eager anticipation of winter’s holidays; and the crack of the baseball bat and homeruns turn into quarterback sacks and touchdowns.

In preparation for the new academic year, I want to share my prayer for my children and for yours.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, as we begin a new school year, I humbly petition you to go before our children. Give them courage to face their challenges and fears, gird them with honor and respect for authority figures, protect them from bullies, shield their minds from depression and anxious thoughts, fill their hearts with love and compassion for all, compel them to always act with kindness, and cultivate their desire to learn.

Cover the schools and all who are contained within those walls. Stand as a mighty fortress that defends against violence and school shootings, natural disasters, and tragedy.

Equip teachers and administrators with loving hearts, patience, and discernment so that all children are perceived as teachable, loveable, and valuable even when they behave the opposite. Refresh each teacher and administrator daily, grant them peace that transcends all understanding, and make their words kind and sweet like honey so they inspire, motivate, and nurture the young minds entrusted to their care.

Embolden parents to daily speak life over their children, to daily cover their babies with prayer, and to daily envelop them with abundant love. Grant these parents unending patience, boundless energy, and financial blessings so they can adequately care for their precious children who are fearfully and wonderfully made in your divine image.

We ask all these blessings in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

Here’s to a wonderful school year for all!
